Piano duets: Enjoy making music at the piano with a friend
As pianists, we really do live such lonely lives. We practice alone, we rehearse alone, and we perform alone. BUT -
This doesn't have to be the case! Get with some of your piano playing friends and learn these fun piano-duo pieces! There are so many great works among this genre, but I want to share a few of Smy favorites:
Schubert - Fantasy In F Minor, D940
A beautiful, serious composition with lyrical melodies: quite a difficult piece, but it is very rewarding to play/perform.
J.S.Bach/G.Kurtág - Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit
Bach is the best (No, really). Kurtag is a master at arranging Bach cantatas for the piano: both partner has something interesting to play, making the composition sound more complex than it already is. The primo in this piece has a fun time with this piece, for their hands are crossed for the entire time!
Bach/Kurtag - Alle Menschen Mussen Sterben, BWV643
Like stated above, Kurtag works Bach so nicely for the keyboard. This duo presents the piece so expertly; both are extremely musical players.
Moszkowski - Spanish dance Op.12 no.3
All of the dances from this set are wonderful, but this one is my favorite! The main purpose for piano four-hands is to be a partnership with the other player! Well, this piece sure does that! Both partners hands are crossed over the other for this piece.
Dvorak - Slavonic Dance Op. 46, No. 8
Such a fun piece! powerful major-to-minor chords are so cool; great to play with your friend. Dvorak also has wonderful lyrical passages in this dance. Quite a crowd pleaser!
Piazzolla - Libertango
Super smooth, spicy duet. Very impressive and technically demanding, but when done well, it is an epic masterpiece.
Brahms - Hungarian Dance No. 1
Another technically demanding piece, but so famous. If you and your partner are up for a challenge, you should infidelity add this to you list of duet repertoire!
